This 2 1/2 hour course presents a fantastic opportunity for your child to learn the basics of sewing. It is designed to equip your son or daughter with the essential skills needed to operate a sewing machine confidently and safely. Completion of this class, or having equivalent experience, is required before they can join our after-school sewing classes. With hands-on instruction and a supportive environment, your child will gain a strong foundation in sewing, setting them up for future creative projects.
Class Breakdown
Sewing Safely
Safety is our top priority. This section covers the essential safety practices to follow while using a sewing machine, ensuring your child can sew without risk of injury.
Threading the Machine
Learning to thread the sewing machine correctly is a fundamental skill. This part of the course will teach your child the step-by-step process of threading the machine, which is crucial for successful sewing.
Winding a Bobbin
Your child will learn how to wind a bobbin, an essential part of preparing the sewing machine for use.
Starting and Stopping
Understanding how to start and stop the machine is key to controlling the sewing process. This section will guide your child through the proper techniques for beginning and ending a seam.
Sewing Backwards and Forwards
This part of the course focuses on mastering the basic movements of the sewing machine. Your child will practice sewing both forwards and backwards, which is important for securing stitches and creating strong seams.
Sewing a Straight Line and Sewing a Curved Line
Your child will learn how to sew both straight and curved lines. These skills are fundamental for creating various sewing projects and achieving precise results.
Straight Stitching and Zig Zag Stitching and How to Adjust the Stitches
This section covers the different types of stitches the machine can perform, focusing on straight stitching and zig-zag stitching. Your child will also learn how to adjust the stitch settings to achieve the desired effect.

Pricing
The course is offered once a month and is limited to 4 students per session to ensure personalised attention. The cost for the 2 1/2 hours of tuition is £30, which includes all necessary supplies.
